Jason Parajeckas Wins New England Open Championship at the Omni Mount Washington Resort

Bretton Woods, NH. – Paul Parajeckas, PGA, has been one of the most consistently excellent players in the New England section of the PGA for more than three decades. On this cool, crisp and, most importantly, clear fall day, his son Jason proved that the apple does not fall far from the tree.

The younger Parajeckas fashioned an 8-under par 64 to come from four shots off the lead to win by one, over 36-hole leader Ron Philo Jr., PGA (Stowe Mountain Club).

Jason, who works as an assistant professional under his father at Pleasant Valley CC (Sutton, MA) was even par for his round, as he stepped to the tee on the par five sixth hole. A monstrous drive and a pitching wedge to a foot, was the beginning of a 10-hole stretch he played in eight under par. The streak included four consecutive birdies on holes 10 - 13.

Philo kept it interesting to the end, narrowly missing a birdie attempt on 18, which would have tied him for the lead. Finishing four off the pace was a trio of Scotts; Scott Spence, PGA (Middletown, RI), Scott Berliner (Albany, NY) and Scott Hawley (Shrewsbury, MA)

Parajeckas was humbled by the win, his first major victory in New England. The recent University of Connecticut golf team member is finishing his third season as a professional and is looking forward to a second attempt at PGA TOUR qualifying school this fall.

“My father didn’t even pay my entry fee this time, so I get to keep the whole thing!” said Parajeckas, not long after Philo’s bid to tie slid by the cup. He was then congratulated by many fellow professionals, not to mention a big bear hug from a very proud father.

One of the other winners this week was the newly redesigned Mount Washington course at the Omni Mount Washington Resort. Brian Silva, working off plans drawn up by Donald Ross, has created a true gem on the Mount Washington valley floor. Despite some challenging weather the first two days, every competitor came away impressed with the quality of the layout and the conditions.

A big reason for the success of the event was Golf Course Superintendent Dave Ousterhaut and his crew. The course was in great condition leading into the event and, through much hard work on their part, the course proved its mettle.

The New England Open Championship will return to the Omni Mount Washington Resort on September 12 – 15, 2011.

3/13/2010: Bretton Woods Nordic MarathonOlympians Victorious at the New England Ski Museum’s Bretton Woods Nordic Marathon

Bretton Woods, N.H. (March 13, 2010) - Olympians towered over their respective fields at the New England Ski Museum’s Bretton Woods Nordic Marathon at Omni Mount Washington Resort presented by CNL Lifestyle Properties, LLC, which took place on Saturday, March 13. Crossing the finish line of the 50-kilometer race only minutes after many of the racers passed the race’s half-way mark was 2006- Olympian-turned-educator Justin Freeman (New Hampton, N.H.) with a crushing time of 2 hours, 21 minutes and 18 seconds (2:21:18.8); the women’s 50-K race was won by 3-time Olympian (1988, 1992, 1994) Dorcas Denhartog-Wonsavage who finished in 3:02:52. In the 25-K race the UVM Catamounts dominated, with UVM racer Fritz Horst (Bennington, Vt.) taking first in the men’s race with a time of 1:13:22, Catamount racer, Mary Stewart (Ripton, Vt.) took first in the women’s race in a time of 1:24:43.

Rounding out the top three for the 50-K men’s race were Tim Whiton (Portland, Maine), a coach at Bowdoin College and Phil Lawson (Bethlehem, N.H.) Following Wonsavage in the women’s 50-K were Alison Crocker (Amherst, Mass.) and Joann Hanowski (Underhill Center, Vt.) Placing second and third in the Men’s 25-K race were St. Lawrence University racer Adam Terko (Shelburne, Vt.) and Charlie Gunn (Henniker, N.H.) who was that event’s first Master racer. Janey McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) another UVM racer was second in the women’s 25-K race; she was followed by third place finisher, St. Lawrence University skier Leah Hart (Meredith, N.H.)

The New England Ski Museum conducts the Bretton Woods Nordic Marathon as a fund-raising event, and the event appeals to a wide variety of Nordic skiers, including serious Masters-age racers, a smattering of collegiate racers and a growing number of more casual citizen racers and recreational skiers. This year a total of 182 people signed up to compete or participate in either the 25-K or 50-K distance. There was an option to be a part of the event on an untimed basis, and a growing number of skiers elect to ski in that category and enjoy the challenge while socializing with friends.

PR: Bretton Woods Nordic Center Hosts 15-km Geschmossel Classic Nordic Ski Race

January 18, 2010 – On Monday, January 18, Bretton Woods Nordic Center, part of Omni Mount Washington Resort, hosted the annual Geschmossel 15- kilometer classical cross-country race. The race followed a course along the rolling terrain of the Bretton Woods Nordic Center in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. The race followed a classical ski format, with no skating allowed.

Originally staged during the winter of 1972-73, the Geschmossel is one of New England’s oldest citizens’ races. The race originated as a 6-kilometer fun race and grew to attract high-level skiers, including members of the United States Ski Team. The original race course at Bretton Woods was groomed using a homemade track sled that was pulled by a rope fastened to a grooming machine. This year’s Geschmossel provided skiers with a double-tracked surface set by a state-of-the-art Pisten Bulley grooming machine. Today’s Bretton Woods trails are also considerably wider and smoother than those of the early 1970s. Now that The Mount Washington Hotel is open year-round, the mass start can easily be viewed from The Mount Washington Hotel’s Conservatory, or outside from the Hotel’s fabled Veranda.

There were 94 participants in this year’s Geschmossel, and awards were presented to the top three finishers in men’s and women’s categories and the winners of separate age groups. Overall, Tucker Murphy of Stowe, VT, finished in first place with a time of 53:26; Phil Lawson of Bethlehem, NH, came just behind in second place at 53:28 overall, and took first place in the Grand Master Men category; and Chris Nice of Hanover, NH, finished third overall with a time of 56:04. For the women, Kelsey Allen of Franconia, NH, was the first to finish with a time of 1:00:03. Ruth Hall of Cumberland Center, ME, came in second in the Women’s division at 1:04:47, and placed first in the Grand Master Women category; and Cheryl Carlson of Lebanon, NH, came third in the Women’s results with a time of 1:05:47. First place finishers for the Great Grand Master category were Doug Armstrong of North Conway, NH, with a time of 57:16 for the men, and Sally Swenson of North Conway, with a time of 1:16:28 for the women. Daily photo 9/18: End of 2nd leg of the Reach the Beach relay - good luck to all!

Runners enter the driveway to Bretton Woods alpine ski area as they conclude the second leg of the Reach the Beach Relay. This annual relay race begins in nearby Franconia Notch and ends at the NH seacoast in Hampton, after an all-night, 200-mile, 37-leg journey for each 12-runner team. The race benefits a number of great organizations, including the NH State Parks.

September 5, 2009, the Bretton Woods Canopy Tour introduces sunset tours!

These evening tours will start at 5:00p and 5:30p on September 5th (rain date, September 6th), and will offer guests the thrilling experience of zipping through the trees during the early evening hours, concluding with the moonrise over The Mount Washington Hotel.

Moderator for the Evening: Myron Kandel
Myron Kandel is one of the nation's best-known financial journalists, having been the Founding Financial Editor of CNN and the Financial Editor of three major newspapers before that. He was part of CNN’s original launch team in 1980 and has been recognized as a pioneer in the development of financial news on television. In 2000, he was named one of the ten most influential business journalists of the 20th century.

He is a commentator on the "Nightly Business Report" program on the Public Broadcasting System, and speaks frequently on media, business and economic issues in this country and abroad.

Following 25 years as Financial Editor and economic commentator for CNN, he spent three years as founder and President of the New Hampshire-based Initiative for Corporate Responsibility and Investor Protection, which produced a series of high-profile public forums on those issues on college campuses around the state. He also conducted a series of half-hour interviews with Presidential aspirants, which ran on New Hampshire Public Television. One of those interviews, with former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, received a Telly award for an outstanding local or regional program in the political/commentary category.
Kandel was a financial reporter for The New York Times before being named Business Editor of the Washington Star. He then became a foreign correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune, covering Germany and the European Common Market. He returned to the U.S. in 1964 to become the Trib’s Financial Editor, holding that post until the paper folded in 1966. He then became Editor and President of the New York Law Journal, the nation's largest daily legal newspaper. From 1976 to 1982, he co-authored a syndicated financial column that appeared in leading newspapers around the country. He was also Financial Editor of the New York Post before leaving to help launch CNN.

He is the author of “How to Cash In on the Coming Stock Market Boom.” The book, published in January 1982, accurately forecast the biggest bull market in Wall Street history, which began that August and continued until 2000.

Among his many honors, Kandel has received a Peabody Award for CNN’s coverage of the 1987 stock market crash and a magazine award from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. He has taught journalism at the City College of New York and Columbia University and has been the president of five journalism groups, including the 3,000-member Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

He has received a number of career achievement awards, including the Loeb Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award, given to an individual whose body of work in business, financial and economic news exemplifies journalistic excellence. He was named to the Financial Journalism Hall of Fame by the New York Financial Writers’ Association, only the seventh person so honored in the group’s 78-year history.

Kandel is a graduate of Brooklyn College and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and has received three honorary doctorate degrees – from Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania; Bethany College in West Virginia, and Franklin Pierce College in New Hampshire.

James Boughton: James Boughton is Historian of the International Monetary Fund and, since 2001, Assistant Director in the Strategy, Policy, and Review Department at the IMF. From 1981 until he was named Historian in 1992, he held various positions in the IMF Research Department. Dr. Boughton holds a Ph.D. in economics from Duke University, and before joining the IMF staff, he was Professor of Economics at Indiana University and had served as an economist at the OECD in Paris. His publications include a textbook on money and banking, a book on the U.S. Federal funds market, several books that he edited or co-edited, and articles in professional journals on international finance, monetary theory and policy, international policy coordination, and the history of economic thought. He is currently writing a sequel to his book, Silent Revolution, which covered the history of the IMF from 1979 to 1989.

Ross Gittell: Ross Gittell is the James R. Carter Professor of Management at the University of New Hampshire's Whittemore School of Business and Economics. He is the author of two books and over 70 academic articles. In 2002 Professor Gittell received the University of New Hampshire’s Excellence in Public Service award and in 2004 the University’s Outstanding Associate Professor award. He is Vice President, forecast manager and on the board of the New England Economic Partnership and also on the boards of the Exeter Trust Company, the Endowment for Health, the Foundation for Healthy Communities and Exeter Hospital. Professor Gittell is a senior fellow at the Carsey Institute at UNH and an academic fellow at the Center for Transformation and Strategic Initiatives at the London School of Economics. Professor Gittell’s research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Energy Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Ford Foundation and the John D and Catherine T MacArthur Foundation. Mount Washington Resort, New England’s premier four-season destination, has announced plans to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the Bretton Woods International Monetary Conference with a special Gold Standard package and a variety of activities throughout the weekend of July 24 – 26, 2009, including a panel discussion and special dinner reception on Saturday evening. The historical package includes a two-night stay at The Mount Washington Hotel, complete with daily breakfast and dinner, as well as a special commemorative gift. The Bretton Woods Conference, also known as the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference, was a meeting of delegates from 44 different countries to agree upon a post-World War II international monetary system. In the post-war economic depression, it was important for all nations to come to an agreement for peace and prosperity worldwide. Through this conference, they successfully established the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), which is currently part of the World Bank.

On Saturday, July 25, guests will be able to visit the Grand Ballroom to take part in a panel discussion regarding the International Monetary Conference. Moderator Myron Kandel, CNN’s founding financial editor, will moderate the discussion and help translate the events of the Bretton Woods Conference into terms that apply to today. Imagine the smell of black powder, the crack and boom of musket fire . . . the sound of horses’ hooves and wagon wheels in the distance. The Second Regiment Light Dragoons, sabers at the ready, begin their long march into battle as part of General George Washington’s Continental Army in the War for Independence. Glimpse Betsy Ross as she stitches the very first American flag. And, listen to the fife and timeless rhythm of marching drums, and find yourself in Gettysburg, awaiting the famous address of President Abraham Lincoln as another chapter of freedom takes root on American soil. Mingle with historic figures, such as Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt; and imagine what it was like to live through their times and become a part of the fabric of America’s history. Mount Washington Resort is pleased to announce a special package, “A Salute to Freedom,” offered the weekend of Friday through Sunday, July 3-5, 2009. This special weekend will be a tribute to American soldiers from every American war, for over 200 years. The celebration includes demonstrations by the Second Regiment Light Dragoons and the United Train of Artillery, which was activated in 1774 and also served in the War of 1812 and American Civil War. There will be appearances of major historical figures in full costume --- you can pose with the former Presidents in a Mt. Rushmore photo opp --- plus storytelling, musical performances, period dance lessons, lectures, dining and a great mix of fun family activities, including a water balloon battle dubbed “The Battle of Wettysburg” --- a light-hearted invitation for guests to bring along their sense of humor, too. There will even be opportunities for the sampling of fine beverages, including the unveiling of Mount Washington Resort’s new signature organic ale. Saturday night, July 4th, will culminate in the “American Celebration Dance” featuring the Hal McIntyre Orchestra, a 1941 spin-off from Glenn Miller’s Orchestra that became a favorite band of American soldiers overseas and has been reborn to continue the dance sounds of the bygone era.

The “Salute to Freedom” package starts at $239 per person, per night for adults based on double occupancy and includes dinner, breakfast and lunch daily, including an American BBQ lunch on Saturday afternoon. This package includes the full slate of “Salute to Freedom” events, activities and entertainment planned for the weekend.
