NEWS: Omni Hotels to Manage Mount Washington Resort

Luxury Hotel Brand Welcomes Historic Resort to Portfolio

IRVING, Texas (August 17, 2009) -- Omni Hotels announces today it has partnered with CNL Lifestyle Properties, Inc., to become the long-term operator of the storied Mount Washington Resort located in Bretton Woods, NH, at the base of beautiful Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast. Opened in 1902, the resort is home to 365 guest rooms in three lodging facilities -- The Mount Washington Hotel, the Bretton Arms Inn and The Lodge -- and serves as a wonderful setting for leisure guests and meeting professionals alike. Omni Hotels will begin management of the luxury New England resort, which will be flagged as the Omni Mount Washington Resort, on September 1, 2009.

“We are pleased to add this extraordinary property to the Omni Hotels’ portfolio, given its fine heritage, the exceptional destination facilities and broad range of year-round leisure and outdoor activities,” said Mike Deitemeyer, president of Omni Hotels. “The addition of this resort is another tremendous step in our strategic expansion.”
The Mount Washington Resort serves as a natural haven for visitors, offering an array of seasonal activities. During the winter months, guests can enjoy skiing and snowboarding at nationally acclaimed Bretton Woods, as well as sleigh rides, dog-sledding, ice skating, snowshoeing and ice climbing. In the summer, guests can enjoy two championship golf courses, tennis, horseback riding, hiking, and fly fishing on the Ammonoosuc River. The resort is also home to the world-class Bretton Woods Canopy Tour, featuring a one-of-a-kind 3.5-hour zip line adventure from treetop to treetop through the beautiful ancient forest of Rosebrook Canyon.

The resort recently completed a multimillion restoration and renovation project that includes a new 25,000-square-foot state-of-the-art spa, a 20,000-square-foot conference center, an outdoor swimming pool complex and guest rooms at the Mount Washington Hotel. CNL Lifestyle Properties has committed to invest an additional $10 million in future renovations, including additional guest rooms, plus food and beverage venues and public areas. Other improvements include the restoration of the 18-hole Mount Washington Course -- owned and operated by Crosland/Celebration Associates -- based on the original 1915 Donald Ross design.

“As we complete the renovation and expansion, we are pleased to transition to Omni Hotels, a respected operator with national sales distribution channels and experience in marketing historic properties,” said R. Byron Carlock, Jr., CEO and president of CNL Lifestyle Properties, Inc.

The resort is surrounded by nearly 800,000 acres of the White Mountain National Forest. It is a two-and-a-half hour drive from Boston and Portland, three hours from Montreal and Providence, six hours from New York and is within two hours of the Manchester, NH airport.

The historic resort is renowned for hosting the Bretton Woods International Monetary Conference in 1944 where delegates established the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, the gold standard was set at $35 an ounce and the American dollar became the benchmark for international exchange. Past guests include Thomas Edison, Babe Ruth and three US Presidents.

Myron Kandel is one of the nation's best-known financial journalists, having been the Founding Financial Editor of CNN and the Financial Editor of three major newspapers before that. He was part of CNN’s original launch team in 1980 and has been recognized as a pioneer in the development of financial news on television. In 2000, he was named one of the ten most influential business journalists of the 20th century.

He is a commentator on the "Nightly Business Report" program on the Public Broadcasting System, and speaks frequently on media, business and economic issues in this country and abroad.

Following 25 years as Financial Editor and economic commentator for CNN, he spent three years as founder and President of the New Hampshire-based Initiative for Corporate Responsibility and Investor Protection, which produced a series of high-profile public forums on those issues on college campuses around the state. He also conducted a series of half-hour interviews with Presidential aspirants, which ran on New Hampshire Public Television. One of those interviews, with former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, received a Telly award for an outstanding local or regional program in the political/commentary category.

He then became Editor and President of the New York Law Journal, the nation's largest daily legal newspaper. From 1976 to 1982, he co-authored a syndicated financial column that appeared in leading newspapers around the country. He was also Financial Editor of the New York Post before leaving to help launch CNN.

He is the author of “How to Cash In on the Coming Stock Market Boom.” The book, published in January 1982, accurately forecast the biggest bull market in Wall Street history, which began that August and continued until 2000.

Among his many honors, Kandel has received a Peabody Award for CNN’s coverage of the 1987 stock market crash and a magazine award from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. He has taught journalism at the City College of New York and Columbia University and has been the president of five journalism groups, including the 3,000-member Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

He has received a number of career achievement awards, including the Loeb Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award, given to an individual whose body of work in business, financial and economic news exemplifies journalistic excellence. He was named to the Financial Journalism Hall of Fame by the New York Financial Writers’ Association, only the seventh person so honored in the group’s 78-year history.

MWR Celebrates the 65th Anniversary of the Bretton Woods Monetary Conference-Guests are Welcome to Participate in a Piece of Modern Day History

Mount Washington Resort, New England’s premier four-season destination, has announced plans to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the Bretton Woods International Monetary Conference with a special Gold Standard package and a variety of activities throughout the weekend of July 24 – 26, 2009, including a panel discussion and special dinner reception on Saturday evening. The historical package includes a two-night stay at The Mount Washington Hotel, complete with daily breakfast and dinner, as well as a special commemorative gift. Rates start at $194.40 per person, based on double occupancy.

The Bretton Woods Conference, also known as the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference, was a meeting of delegates from 44 different countries to agree upon a post-World War II international monetary system. In the post-war economic depression, it was important for all nations to come to an agreement for peace and prosperity worldwide. Through this conference, they successfully established the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), which is currently part of the World Bank.

On Saturday, July 25, guests will be able to visit the Grand Ballroom to take part in a panel discussion regarding the International Monetary Conference. Moderator Myron Kandel, CNN’s founding financial editor, will moderate the discussion and help translate the events of the Bretton Woods Conference into terms that apply to today. Kandel will be joined by James Boughton, Historian of the International Monetary Fund based in Washington, DC; Joseph Brusuelas, an economist from Moody’s Economy.com; Jeffrey S. Coons, Co-Director of Research, Manning & Napier in Rochester, NY; and Ross Gittell, James R Carter Professor & Professor of Management, Whittemore School of Business and Economics, University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH. All guests and speakers will be a part of modern-day history, sitting exactly where the delegates actually sat for 22 days in July of 1944.

The most important aspect of this conference was the creation of the gold standard. By fixing the U.S. dollar to gold, foreign exchange become more efficient to promote economic growth. This helped strengthen the global economy and encourage international trade.

Also on Saturday, July 25, Mount Washington Resort will host a special dinner in the Dining Room. Executive Director of Food and Beverage, Chef Calvin Belknap, and his culinary team led by Executive Chef Edward Swetz will prepare the same six-course meal prepared for the delegates back in 1944 – but with a modern twist.

Mount Washington Resort is well into an extensive $50 million renovation project. “Everyone here at Mount Washington Resort, specifically The Mount Washington Hotel, is eager to show off our recent refurbishment,” said Patrick Corso, President and CEO of Mount Washington Resort. “The refurbishment has all been done to preserve the historic quality and sense of ‘place’ here in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.”

Coming soon to Mount Washington Resort - Mount Washington Organic Amber Ale!

That's right, Mount Washington Resort will soon have its own beer - a delicious organic amber ale, crafted by our friends at the Peak Organic Brewing Company. Mount Washington Organic Amber Ale will make its official debut at the Resort on July 4th!

Some notes from the brewer:
Tasting notes
A lively copper colored ale with a hint of caramel and roasted barley in the aroma. This delicious ale is well balanced, with a subtle sweet start and toasty finish. Medium bodied style, and 5% ABV makes this a tasty pairing with any food dish.

What makes this beer organic?
The ingredients are only sourced from USDA certified organic farms. No chemical fertilizers or toxic pesticides are used to grow the hops and barley. Drinking this beer supports organic farming, drastically reducing the amount of toxic pesticides and chemical fertilizers contaminating farmland and water sources. This beer is produced in a certified organic brewery, meaning that no harmful chemicals or cleaning agents are used in the brewing process (simply purified water).

Mount Washington Resort Invites Guests to Celebrate Independence Day with a "Salute To Freedom" July 3-5, 2009

Imagine the smell of black powder, the crack and boom of musket fire . . . the sound of horses’ hooves and wagon wheels in the distance. The Second Regiment Light Dragoons, sabers at the ready, begin their long march into battle as part of General George Washington’s Continental Army in the War for Independence. Glimpse Betsy Ross as she stitches the very first American flag. And, listen to the fife and timeless rhythm of marching drums, and find yourself in Gettysburg, awaiting the famous address of President Abraham Lincoln as another chapter of freedom takes root on American soil. Mingle with historic figures, such as Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt; and imagine what it was like to live through their times and become a part of the fabric of America’s history. Mount Washington Resort is pleased to announce a special package, “A Salute to Freedom,” offered the weekend of Friday through Sunday, July 3-5, 2009. This special weekend will be a tribute to American soldiers from every American war, for over 200 years. The celebration includes demonstrations by the Second Regiment Light Dragoons and the United Train of Artillery, which was activated in 1774 and also served in the War of 1812 and American Civil War. There will be appearances of major historical figures in full costume --- you can pose with the former Presidents in a Mt. Rushmore photo opp --- plus storytelling, musical performances, period dance lessons, lectures, dining and a great mix of fun family activities, including a water balloon battle dubbed “The Battle of Wettysburg” --- a light-hearted invitation for guests to bring along their sense of humor, too. There will even be opportunities for the sampling of fine beverages, including the unveiling of Mount Washington Resort’s new signature organic ale. Saturday night, July 4th, will culminate in the “American Celebration Dance” featuring the Hal McIntyre Orchestra, a 1941 spin-off from Glenn Miller’s Orchestra that became a favorite band of American soldiers overseas and has been reborn to continue the dance sounds of the bygone era.

The “Salute to Freedom” package starts at $239 per person, per night for adults based on double occupancy and includes dinner, breakfast and lunch daily, including an American BBQ lunch on Saturday afternoon. This package includes the full slate of “Salute to Freedom” events, activities and entertainment planned for the weekend. The weekend of events and entertainment is exclusive to Mount Washington Resort guests on the “Salute to Freedom” package, and package guests also will have the chance to win a complimentary bi-plane ride for two on the afternoon of Saturday, July 4th, 2009. Current and retired U.S. Military personnel with a valid Military identification card receive a 10% discount on the “Salute to Freedom” package.

A full listing of “Salute to Freedom” activities and events can be found on the calendar listing at www.MountWashingtonResort.com. Reservations can be made by visiting www.MountWashingtonResort.com or calling 877.873.0626.

Mount Washington Resort Welcomes New Golf Course Superintendent David Ousterhout

Mount Washington Resort, located in Bretton Woods, NH is pleased to announce the hiring of David Ousterhout as the Resort’s new Golf Course Superintendent. The Golf Club at Mount Washington Resort offers 27 holes of championship golf, including the newly restored 18-hole Mount Washington Course and nine-hole Mount Pleasant Course.

David Ousterhout obtained his Bachelor of Science in Agronomy, with an emphasis in Golf and Sports Turfgrass Management, at Mississippi State University before entering beginning his career in the golf industry. Ousterhout brings to Mount Washington Resort eleven years of experience as Assistant Golf Course Superintendent at three exclusive private country clubs in southeastern New England, including, most recently, working as Assistant Golf Course Superintendent at the Country Club of New Bedford, Massachusetts, for the past five years. Ousterhout’s strong agronomic, landscape construction and horticultural background combine with his significant experience in the renovation of two other vintage Donald Ross-designed golf courses to create an ideal match for Mount Washington Resort, which has recently reopened the Donald Ross-designed 18-hole Mount Washington Course for its first full season of play following a complete restoration by course architect Brian Silva.

Matt Massei, Mount Washington Resort’s General Manager who spent 15 years managing golf operations at Pinehurst, North Carolina, before joining Mount Washington Resort, has been working closely with Michael Carroll, Director of Golf & Club Operations, and David Ousterhout to prepare for the golf season. “David has really hit the ground running after the long winter,” said Massei, “We are very pleased that we were able to find someone with David’s background and experience as we continue to raise the level of golf at Mount Washington Resort. It’s great to have him on board.”

David Ousterhout has relocated to Bartlett, New Hampshire, with his wife Krystal and two dogs. Ousterhout’s family has owned a vacation home in Bartlett for over 20 years, and the move brings Ousterhout to what he calls, “the best of both worlds.” An avid outdoorsman, Ousterhout enjoys golf and being outdoors all summer just as much as skiing, snowboarding and all the outdoor activities that come with the snow.
